The Portuguese Barbershops

The 1880′s to the 1940′s were the golden age for barbershops. During this time, men socialized in all male hangouts, and barbershops rivaled saloons in popularity. Visiting the barbershop was a weekly, and sometimes daily habit. Men would stop in not only for a haircut and a shave, but also to fraternize with friends and chew the fat.

During this golden age, barbershops were classy places with often stunning surroundings. Marble counters were lined with colorful glass blown tonic bottles. The barber chairs were elaborately carved from oak and walnut, and fitted with fine leather upholstery. Everything from the shaving mugs to the advertising signs were rendered with an artistic flourish. The best shops even had crystal chandeliers hanging from fresco painted ceilings.

Despite this level of luxury, barbershops were homey and inviting. A memorable and heavenly man aroma filled the air. The smell of cherry, wintergreen, apple, and butternut flavored pipe and tobacco smoke mixed with the scent of hair tonics, pomades, oils, and neck powders. These aromas became ingrained in the wood and every cranny of the shop. The moment a man stepped inside, he was enveloped in the warm and welcoming familiarity. Lisbon rocks!

Time goes fast and I have finally managed to book a flight to Lisbon again. Damn, I’m really looking forward to meet my Portuguese friends, see those streets, and surf on the Ocean. 8 weeks to go!

CouchSurfing in Bobadela

From March to mid of September 2009, Jakub and me were living in Bobadela (Lisbon in fact), Portugal. During the time we hosted dozen of friends, members of our families and couchsurfers.
Well, to be honest we hosted people from around a whole World and from what I remember now, there were folks from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Canada, Brasil, Australia and even from South Korea! Hmm, probably I missed some countries though. Anyway, you know the deal.

Once upon a time we talked about couchsurfing and how amazing it is as both of us use hospitality of known or unknown people all the time. In fact, I haven’t rented any flat since I moved out from Portugal so I know the best how it is.
One of the funniest sum up was that we have empty flat only 3-4 weeks for a whole time we lived there. Seems more like we were like a motel for travellers and I have a name for the motel, obviously “Motel Bobadela”. Good for it!

A conclusion of that talk was that it would be nice to take some pictures of people who use our couch in our living room. Too bad that we hit on the idea in late June so we missed a lot of interesting scenes. Anyway, I set up one of my camera on a tripod, and since that time, Kuba or me have pushed the shutter button from time to time. This short video shows what we get for it.

I do miss Portugal!

Yes, I do. Since I moved back to Poland. Since I have 2 weeks off and I see this shitty weather behind the window.

Even though I couldn’t afford to go there this summer, Portugal came to Poland. Adorno on tour. That issue reminded me how I was really enjoying the time in Portugal. I love everything related to Portugal. I love how they are late all the time (as I am too), I love how they talk, how they have fun, how they eat. Everything.

Thanks guys for sharing the time with you. For night talks, for eating together, for hours on the road, for hanging out.

Portugal is supercool. Period.

PS. Of course, I miss Eric and Mike either!

Portuguese lifestyle

In this day, there was a first music show which I wanted to attend in Portugal. I woke up about 12 pm, went out for shopping about 1pm and got a text message from my friend like “don’t forget – the show is starting at 2 pm!”. I was pretty sure that he is just joking, so I made a phonecall to him and huh, the show was really set at 2 pm.
I’ve been going to shows for many years and already been in most part of Europe and to be honest, shows start somewhere between 7-10 pm. So it was like a shock for me but what could I did? I went there…

There were like 200-250 kids there and I was completely suprised. Noone was complaining! The gig was nice but then I realized the reason why the show was so early. Benfica and Sporting were playing at 7 pm and show booker wanted to allow people to go and support their football teams. That was something really amazing for me, how people can schedule their time with football priority. Well, Portuguese can! This is what I can call a commitment.

And the funny thing was, that right after a match was finished, the second show was started!

PS. Even if I support Sporting Lisboa, they lost the game..

TODO lists

It’s been a long time since I have posted here for thelast time (and in fact, it was the first time).

This website is about pictures, not about my words (at least not in classic form huh). And some time ago, I was reading my notebook, where was a lotta TO-DO lists for my daily tasks. What I’ve noticed, the most of tasks are done (or crossed down at least), but only apart from photos.

I’m sorry for that. I’m a lazy guy. I have 30-40GB of pictures which I haven’t checked nor edited yet. I promise to try my best in the upcoming days (or weeks…).

Ah, as you can see on the first picture, I wrote down a lot of ideas in my notebook about topics which I wanna present here. Hope they will be published soon.

PS. Of course, “ZDJĘCIA” means “photos” in some part of this world…
