The 1880′s to the 1940′s were the golden age for barbershops. During this time, men socialized in all male hangouts, and barbershops rivaled saloons in popularity. Visiting the barbershop was a weekly, and sometimes daily habit. Men would stop in not only for a haircut and a shave, but also to fraternize with friends and chew the fat.

During this golden age, barbershops were classy places with often stunning surroundings. Marble counters were lined with colorful glass blown tonic bottles. The barber chairs were elaborately carved from oak and walnut, and fitted with fine leather upholstery. Everything from the shaving mugs to the advertising signs were rendered with an artistic flourish. The best shops even had crystal chandeliers hanging from fresco painted ceilings.

Despite this level of luxury, barbershops were homey and inviting. A memorable and heavenly man aroma filled the air. The smell of cherry, wintergreen, apple, and butternut flavored pipe and tobacco smoke mixed with the scent of hair tonics, pomades, oils, and neck powders. These aromas became ingrained in the wood and every cranny of the shop. The moment a man stepped inside, he was enveloped in the warm and welcoming familiarity. He was immediately able to relax, and as soon as the hot lather hit his face, his cares would simply melt away. — copied from The Art Of Manliness

These pictures were taken in Lisbon, July 2011. Analog baby!
Thanks to my fixer Joao Pinheiro who helped me to make it happened!

12+ hours of travel in one way, 5 hours of sleep every day. Kinda dog-tired.
However 2 things were good enough in compesation. Friends, which I hadn’t seen for years and that view from the office where I did the workshop. It’s (again) something what reminds me about Portugal. Love it.

[2009-03-01]
I was employed by promising company. 5 months past and i can’t stand up.
I can’t simple close my eyes and think that after 2 years i will be in the same place, work in the same company, share my flat with the same persons. Even, if I really like these things, I’m so scared not to make another moves.

Travelling, making unexpected (usually stupid) things…yeah, that is what keeps me free. My blood circulates faster and wanna blow up my vains. That’s how I really wanna live. On the edge, somewhere between rise and fall. And I know that my mom will ask me again and again (and she did it like 1000 times), why I can’t grow up and establish my life..

Oh mom, I’m so far, far from breaking!

So, I quit my job. Packed my bags and moved out from this wonderful city from Poland called Wrocław. Just to move somewhere. Discover new places and different cultures. Meet people, give something them, and get something back. Just to extend outlook on my own life.
And yeah! I got new destination, Lisbon! Olá amigos!

PS. Perhaps, in this post there are more words than in all futured together. I hope those words above describe what you can expect to find here. Just keep in mind that pictures will describe here more than any words.

PPS. Jakub Gustak, my comrade who moved with me to Portugal, took the picture of me which is used as a header on the top of this blog. He did it in Paris during our trip between Wrocław and Lisbon.
Check his photoblog http://xprocessed.blogspot.com out!

far, fa r f r o m b r e a k i n g !
